The Mass Mound was erected by the Sisters of St Mary in 1929 to mark the place where, in 1835, the Rev. Charles Quickenborne, Jesuit missionary, offered the first Mass on Iowa soil. Local residents still remember the prayer of that priest asking God to spare the city of Davenport from great storms. The altar  was moved to the new campus in Bettendorf in the 1970's.
